HCC INSTRUCTOR IS FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR

Brenda Kwon, instructor of language arts at Honolulu Community College, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture at Korea University in Seoul, South Korea, during the 2005-06 academic year. She will teach an undergraduate course and a graduate seminar in American Literature.


RED CROSS HONORS MEALS VOLUNTEER

The Hawai'i State Chapter of the American Red Cross and Central Pacific Bank have named Utu Langi as the Red Cross True Blue Hero for the month of July.

Langi is the founder of Hawai'i Helping the Hungry Have Hope or H-5. With the help of community volunteers, he serves hot meals to the homeless from Wai'anae to Waimanalo year round and offers blankets during the winter months.


INTERIM UH DEAN ON SPACE BOARD

Klaus Keil, interim dean of the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology at the University of Hawai'i and a renowned planetary scientist, has been appointed to serve on the Space Studies Board.

He has received national acclaim for his scientific contributions to the understanding of the early history of the solar system and the origin and evolution of meteorites, asteroids and the terrestrial planets.


JON BERLINER TAKES HOUSING POSITION

Jonathon "Jon" Berliner has resigned as director of the Maui AIDS Foundation to accept a position as executive director of Gregory House Programs, a nonprofit organization providing emergency, transitional and permanent housing assistance and support services throughout Hawai'i.

"Serving the Foundation for 11 years, Jon pushed the agency to new heights in both programming and funding," said board president B.J. Ott.


MARITIME CENTER RETIRES $1.4M DEBT

Hawai'i Maritime Center recently celebrated the end of its Financial Freedom Campaign with the "Burning of the Mortgage" mahalo reception. Bill Brown, president and chief executive officer of Bishop Museum and its sister museum, Hawai'i Maritime Center, joined the Bishop Museum board of directors, Bob Krauss, Allen Doane and others who contributed to the $1.4 million debt retirement campaign.

Krauss initiated the campaign with a personal pledge of $100,000 and challenged others to do the same. Doane responded with an identical gift from A&B Foundation.
