Punahou alums in FIVB final eight

Punahou graduates Stein Metzger and Sean Scott reached the final eight with their respective partners yesterday in the Portugal Open at Espinho. The tournament is part of the Swatch-FIVB World Tour.

Metzger and Jake Gibb, who have won three events this year, defeated Martin Laciga and Markus Egger of Switzerland, 21-18, 21-17, in a winners' bracket match.

Metzger and Gibb were beaten by Germany's Julius Brink and Kjell Schneider, 23-25, 15-21.

Scott and partner Todd Rogers yesterday won three matches (one by forfeit).

Kevin Wong, another Punahou graduate, played with Dain Blanton. They lost an elimination match to finish the tournament tied for 17th place.


BASEBALL


COACHES CAMP JULY 23 ON THE BIG ISLAND

A youth baseball coaches clinic is scheduled for 10 a.m. July 23 in the Hapuna Prince Hotel Hau Lehua Room on the Big Island.

Among the collegiate coaches scheduled to participate are Gary Adams (UCLA), Mark Marquess and Tom Kunis (Stanford), Sam Piraro (San Jose State), Mark O'Brien (Santa Clara), Tom Myers (UC Santa Barbara), Rich Price (Kansas), Ed Sprague (Pacific), Lindsey Meggs (Chico State) and Chad Konishi (UH-Manoa) along with former Major League pitcher Tim Leary.

BULLS CLINIC FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS TODAY

The Honolulu Bulls Soccer Club is hosting a clinic and mini-tournament for Special Olympics Hawai'i participants today at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium, in conjunction with the Hawai'i International Cup soccer tournament.

The program, from 9 to 11 a.m., will consist of a clinic focusing on skills training, followed by tournament games and a closing ceremony.

The 12th annual Hawai'i International Soccer Cup, featuring more than 80 teams, runs through Sunday at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Park.

The tournament, hosted by the Honolulu Bulls, includes boys and girls teams from Under-8 to Under-19, and an open adult division.


SWIMMING


SURF SEA NORTH SHORE SERIES CONTINUES

TheSurf & Sea Cup will be held July 23 starting at 9 a.m.

The course starts at Hale'iwa Beach Park and goes to Puena Point and back.

The 1-mile swim is the third event of the Surf & Sea North Shore Swim Series, which is in its 17th year.

YACHTING


DIVISION III, IV STARTS TRANSPACIFIC RUN

Twenty Division III and IV yachts yesterday started the Centennial Transpacific Race from Los Angeles to Honolulu.

On Monday, 33 "slower" boats started the 2,258-nautical mile race.

The last group of boats, Division I and II, will leave tomorrow.

The early starters encountered northerly winds of 18-20 knots. The boats that started yesterday had winds of only a couple of knots.

Class leaders at sea yesterday remained Steve Brown's Brown Sugar (Division V); Sally Honey's Illusion (Cal 40s); Cecil Rossi's Odyssey (Aloha A); and Larry Hillman's So Far (Aloha B).
