  • DWAYNE MUKAI, of Morgan Stanley, has been elected president of the Big Island's Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Hawai'i. He was most recently head of the group's Government Affairs Committee.

    Other officers include first vice president, PHOEBE LAMBETH, of Hawai'i Island Radiation Oncology Ltd.; second vice president, BARRY TANIGUCHI, of KTA Superstores; third vice president, OWEN NAKATSU, of Family Mortgage Co.; Japanese secretary, NAOMI MENOR of Naomi's World Travel Service; treasurer, MICHAEL MIYAHIRA, of Business Strategies, and auditor, YUKIO TAKEYA, of Ala Kai Realty.

  • KAEO GOUVEIA, a member of the opening team of Tiki's Grill & Bar in 2002, takes on increased operational involvement and strategic decision-making at the Waikiki eatery with his promotion from floor manager to assistant general manager. The 325-seat restaurant on the second floor of the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel, has been named "Best New Restaurant" by Honolulu Magazine and The Honolulu Advertiser, and recognized by the Hawai'i Visitors and Convention Bureau's "Keep It Hawai'i" award program.

  • ROSS MURAKAMI, one of the partners who assumed control of the local office of Arthur Anderson LLP in 2002 after the national company was accused of shredding documents related to the Enron bankruptcy, has been named managing partner of that surviving company, KMH (Karns Murakami and Hanashiro) LLP. He is incoming president of the Hawai'i Society of Certified Public Accounts. He replaces RANDY KARNS at KMH, who will remain a partner with the firm in a senior advisory capacity.

  • KARIN L. HOLMA, a partner in the law firm of Bays, Deaver, Lung, Rose & Baba — who specializes in construction law, real-estate litigation, land use, and issues related to property development and construction defects litigation — has been named a member of the city Planning Commission. She is also a director of the Building Industry Association of Hawai'i.

    MATSON NAVIGATION CO. has announced a number of recent promotions in the company's executive team:

  • RON BARRETT, vice president, sales, U.S. Mainland: responsible for all Matson sales activities on the U.S. Mainland. He is a 30-year veteran of both Matson operations and sales positions in Hawai'i, Seattle and San Francisco/Oakland.

  • JOHN DENNEN, vice president and controller: The 28-year industry veteran — 14 years each with American President Lines Ltd. and Sea-Land Service Inc. — joined Matson in 2002 as controller, responsible for all of Matson's accounting, financial reporting and controls, tax functions and Sarbanes Oxley Act (SOX) compliance.

  • BAL DREYFUS, vice president, West Coast terminals and vehicle operations: In addition to current vehicle operations responsibilities, Dreyfus will now oversee management of Matson's West Coast terminal operations in Long Beach, Oakland and Seattle. He will also direct the company's trucking operations, and the operational requirements of Matson's Columbia River Barge Service through Sause Brothers.

  • DALE HENDLER, vice president, corporate development and planning: In addition, Hendler will manage the company's Guam-China project office. Matson announced earlier plans to put its newest cargo ship, the MV Maunalani, into service between the West Coast and China beginning next year.

  • PAUL LONDYNSKY, vice president, safety, quality and environmental affairs; and chief security officer: He is responsible for all Matson programs related to corporate security and safety, and environmental compliance. The 25-year veteran of maritime industry is a U.S. Coast Guard-licensed master mariner, and has held vessel management posts with American President Lines and U.S. Lines.

  • GARY NAKAMATSU, vice president, sales, Hawai'i: Nakamatsu has headed Matson's Hawai'i sales division — including the Neighbor Island sales team — since 1987.

  • SANDRA OHARA has been installed as president of the Rotary Club of Metropolitan Honolulu. Since joining Rotary in 1989, she has served as program chairwoman, membership/public-relations director, vice president and president-elect. The more than 20-year veteran of sales and marketing in the technology industry is director of corporate accounts and government contracts at Adecco Technical Services.

  • HARRY J. COOPER, former head of the Aloha Week Festival, has been named director of public relations for the nonprofit Hawai'i Intergenerational Community Development Association, formed to foster more affordable housing options for seniors; and for Kaluanui Senior Apartments affordable senior apartment building in Hawai'i Kai.

  • Capetown, South Africa, native, JOSAY FERNANDES has been named director of the beachfront spa at the Hyatt Regency Maui. His 20-year career in the hotel and spa industry has included positions as director of the Mandara Spa, Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort and Spa, Honolulu; operations manager, Spa Grande, Grand Wailea Resort Hotel and Spa, and assistant manager at Na Ho'ola Spa.
