TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"Two and a Half Men," 8 p.m., CBS. For the rest of the summer, we're supposed to ease into the Monday lineup CBS is planning for this fall. That includes "King of Queens" at 7 p.m., "Two and a Half Men" at 8 and "CSI: Miami" at 9. That should be easy to enjoy tonight because "Men" has an exceptionally good episode. Each week, Charlie (Charlie Sheen) gathers with his buddies. Alan (Jon Cryer) thinks that sounds suspiciously like a support group and wants to join. As played by Sean Penn, Elvis Costello and Harry Dean Stanton, these guys have great byplay with Charlie. Things are even funnier when Alan wedges his way in.

"Taming the West: The Legend of Jedediah Smith," 5, 9 p.m., History Channel. As young Jedediah Smith pushed into the American frontier, he wasn't your usual roughneck. He could read, write and speak Latin. He was a natural leader who had a sense of the history he was making. His story is told here by Matthew Settle. Smith's bravery and pain threshold was legendary. After he was severely mauled by a bear, he supervised the stitching of his skull — then was back on the trail within two weeks. He was considered a relatively fair man but couldn't master the changing relationships between the newcomers and the American Indians. His story, told by both Indian and non-Indian historians, is interesting.
