Roy Disney and his boat Pyewacket sailed shoulder to shoulder with his top two competitors at the front of the fleet of 75 boats in the first miles of the Transpacific Yacht Race from California to Honolulu yesterday morning.
The three fastest rated contenders Pyewacket, Hasso Plattner's Morning Glory and Randall Pittman's Genuine Risk disappeared into the fog in a virtual tie off California's Palos Verdes Peninsula with about 100 spectator boats watching.
The 75-year-old Disney, nephew of the late Walt Disney, is attempting to break his own world record as he sails in the race for the 15th and final time.
As the boats passed Santa Catalina Island, the only landmark on the entire 2,258-mile journey, Disney was in the lead, 100 yards in front of Genuine Risk with Morning Glory another 100 yards back.
"These boats do have a way of getting away from everybody else," Disney said in a conference call. "It's really nice to get past the island quickly."
The start of the race coincided with yesterday's 50th anniversary celebration of the opening of Disneyland.
