Maui fire crews catch breath after a week full of brushfires

WAILUKU, Maui — Weary Maui firefighters got some rest yesterday after a brutal week in which they battled a rash of maliciously set fires that scorched hundreds of acres of brush.

Crews fought seven more suspicious brushfires over the weekend, and authorities are hoping the public will keep their eyes open for and report any strange behavior, officials said yesterday.

The largest of the weekend's fires occurred early Sunday morning in the Launiupoko area of West Maui. About 120 acres of brush were blackened, but no structures were lost. Honoapi'ilani Highway was closed for about 3 1/2 hours before the blaze was contained at 11 a.m., officials said.

Fire crews were busy all week. A series of suspicious fires last Tuesday along Honoapi'ilani Highway merged into one big fire that burned 200 acres between Ma'alaea and the scenic lookout, while another fire that started in the hills above Lahaina burned for several days, consuming 120 acres.

Maui police Lt. John Jakubczak of the Criminal Investigation Division said arson investigators were checking out tips and others leads, but no suspects have emerged.

Several of the fires were started at multiple points, pointing to malicious intent, and firecrackers were found at one blaze off Baldwin Avenue mauka of Pa'ia, Jakubczak said.

While most of the fires were started in dry brush along roadways, few other similarities stand out, as they started in different areas of the island and at different times of day, he said.

Jakubczak said he suspects the fires might fall under the copycat classification as they immediately followed the big arson fires that struck O'ahu July 11.

"This is ridiculous," he said. "We're just lucky none of ours threatened any residences."

Officials asked that anyone with information on the Maui fires call the police at (808) 244-6425 or Maui CrimeStoppers at (808) 242-6966.

Crime-Stoppers has offered a $1,000 reward.
