Body in burned car was shot in head

Police have yet to identify the body of a person who was found dead in a burning car last week in Mokule'ia, but they do know the person died of a gunshot wound to the head.

The body was discovered after firefighters extinguished a car fire about 1:30 a.m. July 14 in an area known as Army Beach near the Dillingham Air Field. The case was classified as an unattended death pending the outcome of an autopsy.

Yesterday, police said the person died of a single shot to the head.

Police spokesman Capt. Frank Fujii said the victim was burned so badly that dental records will be used to establish an identity. At this point, Fujii said, police aren't sure if the dead person was male or female.

Fujii said homicide detectives are continuing to investigate the case, and he released few details yesterday. He did not say whether the Honda Civic was reported stolen, or if the dead person may be the registered owner.

Fujii also said he did not know if a weapon was found. He said detectives have not ruled out anything, including suicide.

"What makes it suspicious is the fact that the body was burnt and there was a gunshot wound to the head," Fujii said. "We've responded to cases before where cars were on fire and the body was in the car. With regard to having gunshot wounds to the head, that's not something that's real common."

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call HPD's Criminal Investigation Division at 529-3115, or Crime-Stoppers at 955-8300 or *CRIME on a cellular phone.
