Stephanie Kono, buoyed by success last week, leads four Hawai'i players after the first round of qualifying in the 57th U.S. Girls' Junior Championship at BanBury Golf Club in Eagle, Idaho.

Arizona's Taylore Karle leads after firing an 8-under-par 63. That is a shot off Christina Kim's USGA-record 62, set at the 2001 Girls' Junior. Morgan Pressel, who finished tied for second at the U.S. Women's Open, is second at 66.

Kono, who will be a sophomore at Punahou, is coming off a victory at the Westfield Junior PGA Championship last week. She is tied for 18th at even-par 71. Kimberly Kim, 13, from Pahoa, took sixth at Westfield. She shot 72 yesterday and shares 27th.

Recent Kamehameha graduate Mari Chun, a quarterfinalist at the U.S. Women's Public Links last week, opened with a 74 and is tied for 44th. Wailuku's Kaitlen Miyajima, who also qualified for match play at Publinx last week, is at 81.

The top 64 after today's second round advance to match play.

16-YEAR-OLD SETS RECORD AT U.S. JUNIOR AMATEUR

Sixteen-year-old Joe Monte of Chantilly, Va., shot a tournament record 6-under-par 64 yesterday for a two-shot lead after the first round of stroke play at the U.S. Junior Amateur at Longmeadow, Mass.

Monte also tied the course record at Longmeadow Country Club. Christopher Carlin of Pembroke Pines, Fla., David Chung of Fayetteville, N.C., and John Powers of Bowling Green, Ohio, were tied at 66.

The second round of stroke play in the tournament for golfers 17 and younger is today. The top 64 advance to match play tomorrow.

Hilo's Jacob Low, 17, shot a 74 and was tied for 85th in the field of 156 golfers.

YACHTING

PYEWACKET OFF TO GOOD START IN TRANSPAC

Roy Disney's Pyewacket averaged 12.4 knots (14.27 mph) and sailed 270 nautical miles (311 miles) over the first 19 hours to lead the fastest-rated contenders in the 43rd Transpacific Yacht Race yesterday.

The fastest boats began the Los Angeles-to-Honolulu race Sunday.

Hasso Plattner's Morning Glory and Randall Pittman's Genuine Risk clocked 14.15 mph and 13.92, respectively.

Pyewacket was 2,288 miles from Diamond Head.

Morning Glory had sailed 318 miles, but was 2,291 miles out because it took a sharp dip 12 miles south of Pyewacket, which was holding a moderate northerly course, with Genuine Risk halfway in between.

The boat closest to Hawai'i was Ross Pearlman's Jeanneau 52, Between the Sheets, just past halfway at 1,261 miles. The 58-foot yawl Odyssey was 10 miles behind. Both boats are in Aloha A, which started July 11. Between the Sheets won the class in 2003.

John MacLaurin's Davidson 52, Pendragon IV, and Paul Edwards' Catalina 42, Wind Dancer became the second and third boats to retire.

Corrected-time standings:

Division I: Scout Spirit, Pyewacket, Magnitude 80. Division II: Ragtime, Mongoose, Coruba. Division III: Innocent Merriment, Bolt, Stealth Chicken. Division IV: Kahoots, Wild Impulse, Pursuit. Division V: DH-Soap Opera, Super Gnat, B'Quest. Cal 40: Ralphie, Seafire, Callisto. Aloha A: Between the Sheets, Odyssey, Plan B. Aloha B: So Far, Pipe Dream, Azure.
