A 19-year-old Mililani man was reported to be in critical condition this morning at The Queen's Medical Center with injuries he received when the compact truck he was driving veered off of Meheula Parkway and smashed into a tree about 2 a.m.

A 14-year-old girl who was a passenger in the truck was also taken to Queen's where her condition had improved from critical to serious, traffic investigators said.

The man was driving a 1993 Nissan Frontier south on Meheula Parkway when it struck the curb, bounced of one tree and then hit a second tree almost head on.

Neither the driver, nor the passenger were wearing seat belts, investigators said. The driver suffered head, leg and chest injuries while the passenger had head injuries, police said.

Speeding may have played a part in the crash, they said.
