The Kamehameha Schools launched its $84 million facelift of the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center by announcing several new tenants for the Waikiki shopping center.

During its groundbreaking ceremonies yesterday, Kamehameha Schools and Los Angeles developer The Festival Companies said it signed up trendy women's bag designer Kate Spade, fine watch retailer Tourneau and popular Mexican restaurant operator Senor Frog's to open their first Hawai'i locations at the mall.

The estate also said it will bring back large-scale Waikiki themed-shows to the fourth-level Aloha Showroom with productions by Paradise Cove lu'au producer Roy Tokujo.

"It's really an exciting time for us to see the transformation take place," said Kirk Belsby, vice president of endowment for the Kamehameha Schools.

The renovation — the center's first since the mall was completed in 1980 — will incorporate Hawaiian cultural and historical themes in the center's design and will include open-air lanais to create additional open space.

The redevelopment is expected to be finished in late 2006 and is designed to complement other ongoing Waikiki renewal projects.
