WEIGHTY MATTERS: Singer-comedian Frank DeLima, who makes his Hawaii Opera Theatre debut tomorrow night in "The Pirates of Penzance" at Blaisdell Concert Hall, is still trying to slim down. He's far from svelte, but he's dipped from 320 to 245 pounds, and is hoping to melt away another 45. "I promised the kids at 'Aina Haina school that I was going to fit that XL shirt they gave me last year," he said. "I've already worked down to the XXL shirt that the students at Kalama School on Maui gave me, when I was XXXL, and the fifth- and sixth-graders thought that was a hoot."

DeLima and Na Kolohe return to Waikiki Aug. 6, doing a lone 9 p.m. Saturday-only show at Margarita's on Lewers Street. The Mexican restaurant is owned by the folks who operate Jose's. ...

DeLima, by the way, still is involved in fund-raising efforts for the Adult Friends for Youth, which is slated to hold its annual biggie Nov. 25 at the Sheraton Waikiki hotel. Jordan Segundo is the group's new spokesman. ...

TRADE WINDS: John Daly, Academy Award-winning producer, director and writer ("Platoon," "The Last Emperor," "The Terminator," "Hoosiers"), will meet potential distribution campaign investors for a new indie film, "The Aryan Couple," Sunday at the New Otani Hotel. Innovations Development Group and its new subsidiary, Blue Rain Entertainment Corp., will host a gathering to launch Blue Rain, a company headed by singer-actress Marlene Sai. The company hopes to produce and promote Island recordings and films in Hawai'i. Daly will check the feasibility of collaborating on a local film project titled "Motherland," in which Elizabeth Lindsey Buyers could star, with screenplay by Leo Anderson Akana. The film is about a cross-cultural Hawaiian family torn apart by the overthrow of Queen Lili'uokalani.

ITEMIZATIONS: Pals of actor Welly Yang, whose theater company, Second Generation, earlier performed here, may be happy to hear that he's engaged to co-star Dina Morishita. He proposed to her in front of a crowd of 1,600 at the conclusion of the world premiere of his "Welly Yang: Finding Home" show July 9 in Los Angeles. Yang, who was Thuy in "Miss Saigon" on Broadway, is also a co-producer (though his Second Generation group) of "Burn This," the theatrical endeavor of Jason Scott Lee, next month at the Ulua Theatre on the Big Island. ...

IATSE, the trade union, is convening this week at the Sheraton Waikiki and Royal Hawaiian hotels, with delegates from 13 districts in attendance. One member who wished he could be here — Jim Lapidus, of the designers guild — can't, because the ex-localite has started his fifth season designing for Fox's hit show "24," starring Kiefer Sutherland. ...

John Kolivas debuted two new compositions, "The Theme from '2' " (for brother Robert Pennybacker's short film, "2") and "Mid Life," about mid-life crisis, at the Hawai'i Jazz Quartet's recent Studio 6 gig. ...

NOTABLES: After two days at the recent Hotel & Restaurant Expo at Blaisdell Center, where he tended to his Clipper Mill and breadbaskets.com booth, San Francisco-based Bob Carrigan enjoyed an exquisite dinner at Shanghai Bistro, having met owner Li May Tang at the exposition. Carrigan globe-hops to all major restaurant shows, including Shanghai, so he had lots to talk about as he enjoyed Chef Chang's dim sum and specialty martinis before meeting friends for dinner. Shanghai Bistro serves up some of the tastiest and prettiest morsels, a feast for both eyes and tummy; if you have a birthday, order up an exotic "sculpture" of sweet pastries, shaped like fishes or dragons. ...

Retired physician Garrett Saikley had a surprise birthday hosted by partner Bobby Carpenter Sunday night at Le Bistro, but as soon as the guests settled down, the power went out. The restaurant didn't skip a beat; tables were moved to the Niu Valley Shopping Center parking lot, where the meal al fresco 'neath the stars made it only that much more memorable. Entertainers Cathy Foy and Guy Merola, backed by Alethea Train, provided music by flashlight. Ah, glow biz. ...

If you were glued to the TV in the days when Curtis "The Bull" Iaukea, Ripper Collins, "Handsome" Johnny Barend, Neff Maiava, The Missing Link and The Masked Executioner prevailed, you may want to check out a display dubbed "The Golden Age of Pro Wrestling," from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Blaisdell Exhibition Hall. Iaukea will be in the flesh, for a locker room interview. ...

And that's Show Biz. ...
