Kim wins twice; Kono, Chun ousted

Kimberly Kim, a 13-year-old from the Big Island, was the lone Hawai'i golfer to advance in yesterday's match play rounds in the 57th U.S. Girls' Junior Championship at BanBury Golf Club in Eagle, Idaho.
Kim, of Pahoa, ousted Annie Brophy of Spokane, Wash., 4 and 2, in the round of 32.
Earlier, in the round of 64, Kim went on a birdie barrage to eliminate Pearl City's Mari Chun, 7 and 6.
Stephanie Kono, a Punahou School sophomore, won in the morning round, but was eliminated in the afternoon round by In-Bee Park of Las Vegas, 3 and 2.
Kim will play Park in this morning's round of 16. If Kim wins, she advances to the quarterfinals later in the day.
CHOY GAINS MATCH PLAY
Wahiawa's Britney Choy shot even-par 72 in yesterday's final round of qualifying at the 75th Trans Amateur Championship, in Southern Pines, N.C. Choy tied for seventh at 4-over 148.
Paige Mackenzie of Washington earned medalist honors at 71-71142. The top 64 advance to match play today at Mid Pines Inn&Golf Club.
KIM TIED FOR 18TH
Pahoa's Christine Kim shot 8-over 80 for a 163 total and was tied for 18th after two rounds of the AJGA's Ping Junior at Patterson, Calif.
Jenny Kim, of Los Angeles, shot 69138 for a seven-stroke lead.
In the boys' division, Kamuela's Max Bonk and Matt Bonk (77), and 'Aiea's Michael Jay Sato (79) were tied for 66th place at 156. Honolulu's Shunsuke Aonuma (82164) was tied for 83rd.
California's Patrick Tom (69) and David Zeuske (67) share a two-stroke lead at 137.
LOW FALLS IN PLAYOFF
Defending champion Sihwan Kim of Fullerton, Calif., defeated Hilo's Jacob Low on the first playoff hole yesterday in the first round of match play at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championships at Longmeadow, Mass.
Kim made par, while Low missed a 3-foot par putt at the Longmeadow Country Club.
