After sparring 12 spirited rounds yesterday, Brian Viloria left the gym in Los Angeles feeling good about his first world championship fight, the July 30 World Boxing Council light flyweight bout in Las Vegas.

Then, he got rocked by an unseen punch: The cancellation of the card.

"I was stunned; I was speechless," Viloria said after Top Rank Inc. called off the card following an injury to Lucia Rijker, who was to have fought in the pay-per-view "Million Dollar Lady" main event at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. "I had no idea this was coming."

"This has been just a horrible day," said Gary Gittelsohn, Viloria's manager, after the bout with champion Eric Ortiz (24-4) had been postponed indefinitely.

"We're looking at a couple of possible dates (Aug. 26 at yet-to-be determined site or Sept. 10 in Los Angeles), but nothing has been set yet," Gittelsohn said.

"I will get another date as soon as possible so all the hard work in the gym doesn't go to waste," Gittelsohn said. "Brian had prepared perfectly. He had been fine tuning. He had a great day of sparring and he was going to have his last day of sparring on Friday. That's how sharp he was."

The unbeaten Viloria (17-0, 11 KOs) said: "I was really mad. I was disappointed. I had prepared myself so much for this fight and, now, not to be able to pursue it ..."

Gittelsohn said "about 200" Viloria fans from Hawai'i and Los Angeles had been scheduled to attend the fight.

Top Rank said Rijker, who was to have fought Christy Martin, suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in training and is scheduled for surgery today.
