The case was initially classified as an unattended death but was later reclassified as a homicide after an autopsy determined that Kuan died from a single gunshot wound to the head.
Kuan, originally from Taiwan, lived at an apartment building off South King Street in Mo'ili'ili and worked as a busboy at a restaurant in Kaimuki.
BIG ISLAND TEXAS MAN MISSING IN PUNA
The city Department of the Medical Examiner has identified Cheng Wen Kuan, 23, as the man whose body was found July 14 in a burning car at a beach across from Dillingham Airfield in Mokule'ia.

Big Island police are looking for a 41-year-old man who has been missing since Sunday evening.
Gilbert Dewey Gaedcke of Texas left the Kalani Honua Retreat in rural Puna at 9:30 p.m. Sunday and hasn't been seen since.
He was reported missing the following morning, and his car was found at the end of Kalapana Road. The keys were found near the car, and police and fire rescue searchers said there were no signs of foul play in the area.
Gaedcke is 5 feet 9 and about 190 pounds. He has a stocky build, brown hair and a fair complexion, police said.

TWO INJURED IN MEHEULA CRASH
A 19-year-old Mililani man was reported in critical condition yesterday morning at The Queen's Medical Center with injuries he received when the compact truck he was driving veered off Meheula Parkway and smashed into a tree about 2 a.m.
A 14-year-old girl who was a passenger in the truck also was taken to Queen's, where her condition had improved from critical to serious, traffic investigators said.
The man was driving a 1993 Nissan Frontier south on Meheula Parkway when it struck the curb, bounced off one tree and then hit a second tree almost head-on.
Neither the driver, nor the passenger were wearing seat belts, investigators said. The driver suffered head, leg and chest injuries, while the passenger had head injuries.

MCCLAIN TO SPEAK ON UH MATTERS
David McClain, interim president of the University of Hawai'i, will discuss the future of the UH system at a joint meeting of the Kahala and Kaimuki business associations at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Waialae Country Club.
McClain is expected to discuss tuition increases, the athletic department and the medical school.

THREE STUDENTS WIN SCHOLARSHIPS
Three Kaua'i high schoolers have been awarded the first General Eric K. and Patricia Shinseki Scholarships, which are worth $2,000 each.
The students are Kelcie Ann Kawamura of Kaua'i High; Jonathan Moeller of Kapa'a High; and Kalen Bagano of Waimea High.
Shinseki, the retired Army chief of staff and a Kaua'i native, established the scholarship to encourage youth from that island to further their education.
Moeller plans to attend Westmount College in Santa Barbara; Bagano will go to the University of Hawai'i-Manoa, and Kawamura will go to the University of Washington.
