UH CORAL PROJECT GRANTED $800,000

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has awarded two grants totaling more than $800,000 to the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's Kewalo Marine Laboratory.

The laboratory, a unit of the Pacific Biomedical Research Center, will use the money to support continuing research headed by Robert Richmond on coral reef protection, including implementation of scientific findings and policy development in the Pacific.

The research projects will focus on the effects of land-based sources of pollution on coastal reefs and how to better manage human activities in adjacent watersheds. Forensic tools are being developed to allow scientists to detect coral stress at early stages.
