Looking for something a little different from the usual Hollywood summer movies?

There are a couple of options this weekend and beyond:

  • Several of the 2005 Oscar-nominated and -winning short subject films have been compiled into one, unrated 120-minute presentation.

The winners were "Wasp," a live-action tale about a single mother and her four children; and "Ryan," an animated documentary about Ryan Larkin, who around 1970 made animated films considered among the best in Canadian history. Others include "7:35 in the Morning," "Little Terrorist," "Two Cars, One Night," "Birthday Boy" and "Gopher Broke."

Film critic Roger Ebert gives the collection four stars.

It's screening at 1, 4 and 7:30 p.m. today and tomorrow; at 7:30 p.m. Monday and at 1 and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the Doris Duke Theatre, Honolulu Academy of Arts.

  • "Schizo" is about a 15-year-old boy in Kazakhstan who, at the command of his mother's boy-friend, recruits young boxers for illegal fights. But his life is turned upside down after one of his recruited boxers dies in the ring.

The film, which has drawn rave reviews at film festivals, is unrated. In Russian with English subtitles; 86 minutes. It continues at the Dole Cannery theaters.
