Wahiawa's Choy falls at Trans Amateur golf

Wahiawa's Britney Chow was defeated by Leah M. Wigger, of Louisville, Ky., 4-and-2, in yesterday's round of 32 in the 75th Trans Amateur Championship in Southern Pines, N.C.
Choy, a Leilehua High junior, defeated Courtney Jones, of Lake Quivira, Kan., 3-and-2, Thursday in the opening round of match play.
BASEBALL
HILO LOSES OPENER, 8-1
Clayton Edwards tossed a one-hitter and Eric Blackwell belted a three-run home run to lift Thousand Oaks (Calif.) over Hilo, 8-1, yesterday in the opening round of the Little League Big League (16-18) Western Regional at American River College in Sacramento, Calif.
Thousand Oaks scored three runs in the second inning and four in the sixth. Stephen Notaro went 2 for 3 for Thousand Oaks.
Hawai'i plays Sacramento today at 5 p.m. Hawai'i time.
PADDLING
MITCHELL AFTER FOUR-PEAT
After dominating races on O'ahu's North Shore the past few years, Australia's Jamie Mitchell will attempt to win a paddleboard race on the south shore today.
Mitchell will attempt to win his fourth consecutive Hennessey's International Paddleboard Championship today. For the first time, the course will be held on O'ahu's south shore.
The 8-mile race will start at Hawai'i Kai and finish at Kaimana Beach, Waikiki.
More than 150 paddlers are expected to compete. Top Hawai'i entries include Guy Pere and Brian Rocheleau.
The race will start at 11 a.m., and first finishers are expected around noon.
MOUNTAIN BIKING
DIRT DAY ON JULY 31
Kualoa Ranch will host the Dirt Day in Paradise mountain bike race on July 31.
More than 100 bike riders will compete at the ranch, which is used as a training area by world-class athletes.

COCKETT WILL BE GUEST
Former All-America basketball player Nani Cockett will be the featured instructor at this weekend's Hawai'i Speed and Quickness clinics at the University of Hawai'i.
"I'm glad to help," said Cockett, who starred with the Rainbow Wahine in the mid-1990s.
The clinic is today and tomorrow. Fee is $10.
