Pacific Writers Connection hosts Aug. 2-4 O'ahu event

The Pacific Writers Connection is hosting Language of the Land 2005, Ka Wai, Ka 'Aina a me na Loina — Water, Land and Values, Aug. 2-4 on O'ahu. Events, in various locations, include readings, conversations with writers and a youth outreach event.

The guests include American Indian writer and teacher Debra Magpie Earling; director of the Northwest Writing Institute Kim Stafford; Australian writer and professor of law and indigenous studies Larissa Behrendt, ecological journalist Mark Tredinnick, and writer and editor of 'Oiwi, a Native Hawaiian journal Ku'ualoha Hoomanawanui.

  • Opening reception, 6 p.m. Aug. 2, Doris Duke Theatre at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. Keynote address by Eric Enos, hula performance by Halau o ke 'A'ali'i Ku Makani, kumu hula Manu Boyd.

  • Conversations with writers, 11:30 a.m. Aug. 3, in three locations.

  • Reading, 6:30 p.m. Aug. 3, Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies, University of Hawai'i-Manoa.

  • Youth outreach, 9 a.m. to noon, Center for Hawaiian Studies, Aug. 4.
