A once-over of the state's Act 221/215 high tech investment and research tax credit and a chance to hear from key state tax officials will be offered at a joint meeting Thursday of the HAWAI'I VENTURE CAPITAL ASSOCIATION and HAWAI'I TECHNOLOGY TRADE ASSOCIATION. Speaking will be Kurt Kawafuchi, director of the state Department of Taxation. The 2004 legislature made changes and passed an extension of the original legislation, known as Act 221. Among matters to be discussed Thursday will be current data on how the program is helping build companies and create new jobs in Hawai'i. Before his current position, Kawafuchi supervised the state Attorney General's Tax Division, which represents the state in tax litigation in federal and state trial and appellate courts. Thursday's discussion, open to the public, is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. registration to 1:30 p.m. at The Plaza Club, Pioneer Plaza. Fee; nonmembers and guests welcome. Enhanced access to state government information and services online will be the subject of a speech Thursday to the monthly luncheon meeting of HAWAI'I ECONOMIC ASSOCIATION. The first in a series of small business seminars for the Leeward and North Shore coasts of O'ahu will be offered Thursday by the U.S. Small Business Administration and the city Office of Economic Development. This free workshop for existing businesses, "WINNING TIPS FOR GROWING YOUR BUSINESS," will offer information on SBA's financing programs, free consulting and technical assistance, and tips from business bankers on financing packages, application procedures and speedy loan approval. The architectural, environmental and financing hurdles of developing the long under-utilized plot of land at South King Street and mauka Kalakaua Avenue into a planned $18-million, "upscale" self-storage facility will be the focus of a breakfast presentation Friday to the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties. Planned on the site is a four-story Aloha Island Self-Storage, 110,000 square foot Hawaiian-themed facility.
