A 46-year-old woman was killed yesterday when she was struck by a hit-and-run driver as she was crossing Joseph P. Leong Highway in Hale'iwa, police said.
It was the second fatal pedestrian accident on O'ahu in four days.
Police said the woman, who has no local address, was standing on the east side of the highway and talking with someone in a car parked on the opposite shoulder, about a half-mile south of Emerson Road.
The woman was hit by a northbound pickup truck or SUV as she tried to cross the road at 2:09 p.m., police said. The vehicle may have crossed the center line and hit the woman in the southbound lane, police said. The driver sped off.
The woman died at the scene. The medical examiner's office did not immediately release her name.
Police asked for the public's help in finding the driver. Police said the vehicle was described as a Chevrolet or GMC-type pickup or SUV, between 1985 and 1993.
The vehicle probably suffered significant front-end damage and is missing its driver's-side mirror, police said.
