The stepmother of 5-year-old beating victim Talia Williams was denied bail by U.S. Magistrate Judge Barry M. Kurren in a hearing this morning.

Delilah Williams, dressed in a light-blue prison issue top and dark blue slacks, sat with her head in her left hand throughout the proceedings. She did not speak in court, but sobbed after the judge ordered her to remain in custody until her preliminary hearing.

Williams' court-appointed attorney, Alexander Silvert, said no date has been set for the preliminary hearing but that he plans to ask for a continuance to gather more evidence.

Delilah Williams was charged with murder in connection with Talia's death. Talia's father, Naeem Williams, who is a Schofield Barracks soldier, is being held by military authorities in "pretrial confinement" and has not been formally charged.

Talia was taken to the hospital July 16 after emergency medical personnel were called to the Williams' apartment and found her unresponsive. At the hospital, she was pronounced dead.
