Honolulu sets record gas price

The average price of regular gasoline in Honolulu rose to a record $2.565 a gallon, according to yesterday's AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report.

On Maui, the average price in Wailuku rose to a record $2.904.

The statewide average was $2.648 a gallon, down slightly from the record $2.654 reached Sunday.


LL RANKS 15TH ON GROWTH LIST

L&L Drive Inn, which operates under the name L&L Hawaiian Barbecue on the Mainland, was ranked 15th on the Top 50 Growth Chains list released recently by U.S. Restaurant Business magazine.

L&L, which opened its first Mainland outlet in Puente Hills, Calif., in 1999, has nearly 150 restaurants in Hawai'i and eight other states.


CONTRACTORS TO HOLD TRADE SHOW

Several local contractors' groups together will put on the first Joint Trade Show Aug. 12 at the Hawaii Prince Hotel.

The groups are: The Hawaii Flooring Association, the Roofing Contractors Association of Hawaii, the Wall & Ceiling Industry Association and the Painting & Decorating Contractors Association of Hawaii.

The event will feature seminars on a range of subjects, including lead and asbestos paint, water intrusion and mold remediation. For more information, call 537-1224.


UH CREDIT UNION CELEBRATES 50TH

The University of Hawaii Federal Credit Union will celebrate its 50th anniversary Aug. 8 with a party for members at its McCully branch.

The credit union has grown since 1955, when it was launched by 12 people with a cash can in a room in Gilmore Hall on the Manoa campus.

As of December 2004, UHFCU reported $293.3 million in total assets, a 6 percent increase from the previous year.

GENERIC DRUG GIANTS TO MERGE

Teva Pharmaceuticals said it will buy U.S. rival Ivax for $7.4 billion to create the world's biggest generic prescription drug maker.

The deal is the biggest ever for the Israel-based Teva and one of the biggest in the generic drug industry.

The merger of two of the biggest generic drug suppliers to the United States might lead to price increases for some drugs, but competition in generic drugs is expected to mitigate any broad increases.
