Man, 18, pulled from water dies

An 18-year-old man died yesterday after he was pulled unconscious from the waters off Waikiki Beach.

Police said witnesses saw the Kane'ohe man jump off a wall into the water about 4:30 p.m. The man was later found unresponsive and was pulled from the water.

Lifeguards and ambulance personnel performed CPR and the man was taken to Straub Clinic and Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The man's name was not released last night.

An autopsy will be done.


CALIFORNIA SAILOR ARRESTED IN FIGHT

A 24-year-old Navy sailor from California was arrested early yesterday morning after he allegedly knocked a shipmate unconscious in Waikiki.

The injured sailor, also 24, was taken to The Queen's Medical Center after the 2:45 a.m. incident. No information on his condition was available.

Police said both of the men are assigned to the USS Cleveland, which is docked at Pearl Harbor. They were on shore leave and were intoxicated when the altercation took place.


NANAKULI


TEEN ARRESTED IN JULY 1 FIRE

A 14-year-old boy was arrested yesterday on suspicion of starting a brushfire in Nanakuli this month.

The boy turned himself in at the Kapolei police station at 12:15 p.m. yesterday and was booked on one count of second-degree criminal property damage. He was released a short while later without being charged, pending further investigation, police said.

The Nanakuli youth is accused of starting a fire July 1 at Farrington Highway and Haleakala Avenue. Witnesses told police they saw several juveniles in the area at about 10 a.m., just before the fire began.

An investigation led police to the 14-year-old boy, who was identified by a 30-year-old witness, police said. Police contacted the youth and he turned himself in yesterday.

WATERSHED GRANTS AVAILABLE

The Honolulu Board of Water Supply is seeking applicants for its Watershed Management Partnership Program which provides money to community groups to support conservation and watershed protection activities.

Applicants must be not-for-profit organizations that are seeking money for watershed studies, watershed resource protection, educational outreach for watershed management, invasive species control, forest protection, water conservation and other activities.

Eligibility requirements and application forms are available online at www.hbws.org or www.boardofwatersupply.com.

Applications must be postmarked by noon Aug. 31.

INFO MEETING ON FERRY THURSDAY

An informational meeting on the Hawai'i Superferry will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the 'Ewa Beach School and Public Library building, 91-950 North Road.

The Superferry company is planning to start interisland operations in early 2007.

POLICE SEARCHING FOR INMATE

Big Island police are looking for a 24-year-old fugitive who violated the conditions of his furlough by not checking in at the Hale Nani minimum-security facility in Hilo on July 1.

The missing inmate was identified as Joshua Hall, who is known to frequent the Paradise Park area of Puna. He is 6 feet 3 and about 250 pounds, and has brown hair and eyes. Hall also has a thin mustache and goatee.

MAUI


BEACH ACCESS CLOSED FRIDAY

The Maui County Department of Parks and Recreation will close the Keawakapu Beach right-of-way in Kihei on Friday to allow work on replacing and repairing portions of the safety railing that leads to the beach.

The county is advising beachgoers to use an alternative access at the end of Kilohana Street. Parking is available at the corner of Kilohana and South Kihei Road.
