MAUI

GUARD HONORED FOR WATER RESCUE

WAILUKU — The Maui County Department of Fire and Public Safety Commission has presented its Kahu Ola Award to Wade Kamaka, who risked his life to rescue two swimmers at Keawakapu Beach in Kihei on Feb. 19.

Kamaka, a Maui Community Correctional Center guard, suffered minor abrasions during the rescue. "Were it not for Wade Kamaka, one woman would have surely lost her life, as the two swimmers were quite hysterical at the time and their panic could have caused them to drown," said Fire Chief Carl Kaupalolo.

The Kahu Ola ("Guardian of Life") Award was established by the commission to honor firefighters and residents who save others through heroic action.
