Former University of Hawai'i receiver/kick returner Chad Owens yesterday signed a three-year deal worth more than $1 million, the Jacksonville Jaguars announced.

Owens, a former Roosevelt High School athlete, will receive a signing bonus of $78,000, according to his agent, Leo Goeas.

Only the signing bonus is guaranteed in the NFL.

If Owens makes the 2005 opening-day roster, he will receive the NFL-minimum base salary of $230,000. The base increases to $310,000 for the second season and $385,000 for the third.

"Chad is excited, obviously," Goeas said.

Owens' signing leaves only first-round selection Matt Jones, a receiver who played quarterback at Arkansas, as the only Jacksonville player not under contract.

The 5-foot-7, 183-pound Owens was the Jags' sixth-round draft pick and figures to be the team's top return man this season.

Owens finished his career at UH as the school's all-time leader in all-purpose yards, receptions and punt return yards. He led the Warriors with 102 receptions for 1,290 yards and 17 touchdowns as a senior, and set a school record with five punts returned for touchdowns.

Owens, 23, finished his college career with six punts and two kickoffs returned for touchdowns.

RB ALEXANDER SIGNS

Seattle running back Shaun Alexander, who led the NFL with 20 touchdowns last season, signed the one-year, $6.32 million contract he was guaranteed when the team designated him as its franchise player in February.

The guaranteed contract ensures that Alexander will report to training camp in Cheney, Wash., on time tomorrow.

TOP DRAFT PICK SIGNS

Oakland signed top draft pick Fabian Washington to a five-year, $7.8 million contract yesterday and also added three free agents three days before the team's first training camp practice.

Oakland also signed safety Calvin Branch and defensive tackles Lorn Mayers and Michael Quarshie.

DT CASTILLO SIGNS

Defensive tackle Luis Castillo, one of San Diego's two first-round draft picks, agreed to a five-year contract yesterday and was expected to be at the second practice of training camp.
