U.S. House and Senate conferees have approved language authorizing a rapid transit project for Honolulu.

Democratic Sens. Daniel Inouye and Daniel Akaka said last night in a news release issued in Washington that the authorization will allow the project to move forward. It will also permit the appropriation of federal funds at the appropriate time, they said.

The language is contained in a bill that has earmarked $154 million for 18 transportation-related improvement projects in Hawai'i. After final approval by the House and Senate, the measure will go to President Bush.

Among other things, the bill contains $50 million for the continuation of work to the nonmilitary portion of Saddle Road on the Big Island.

Once the project is completed, Saddle Road will become a bypass that cuts 16 miles from the trip between Hilo and Kailua-Kona, Inouye said.

An additional $40 million is included in the measure for traffic improvements in Kapolei on O'ahu. They include the Kapolei Interchange and North-South Road.
