HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island police have charged an 18-year-old Hilo man with robbery and theft in connection with an attack Monday on tourists at Rainbow Falls.

Spenser Jordan Feary was charged with two counts of second-degree robbery, two counts of second-degree theft and three traffic offenses, police said. He was being held in the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $54,750 bail.

Hilo police said an Arizona couple was accosted at the falls Monday by a group of men or older boys. Two youths punched and kicked a 31-year-old man and took his camera, while a third youth grabbed the purse of a 33-year-old woman.

When one of the youths saw a 52-year-old tourist from California videotaping the incident, the youth attacked that man and took the video camera. The man's 45-year-old wife was threatened by another youth, and she surrendered her camera to the youth.

Police found the car the youths left in, and arrested Feary and a 17-year-old boy. The boy was sent to the Hawai'i Youth Correctional Facility on O'ahu.

Police are asking that anyone who witnessed this robbery at the park to call Detective Lucille Melemai at 961-2377 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.
