7 WIN RECOGNITION BY UH COLLEGE
The University of Hawai'i-Manoa College of Education recently honored seven members of the community at its 18th annual recognition dinner.
Gail Awakuni, principal of James Campbell High School, received an Award of Distinction. Awakuni is also the 2005 National High School Principal of the Year, an honor conferred by Metlife and the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
Valorie Johnson, program director of W.K. Kellogg Foundation, received an Award of Distinction. She plays a key role in increasing the learning of youth, especially those most vulnerable to poor achievement.
Janet Ishikawa-Fullmer, retired from the College of Education, received the College of Education Alumni Association's 2005 Distinguished Alumnus Award. Over the years she has served others as a teacher, counselor, community college dean and clinical psychologist.
Jerry Burris, The Honolulu Advertiser's editorial page editor, received the Award of Excellence in Media. He has promoted debate and discussion of education in the community.
Alfred Castle, of the Castle Foundation, received an Award of Excellence for his sustained commitment to early childhood education and care. Among his goals with the foundation is the creation of a universal pre-kindergarten in Hawai'i for families who cannot afford preschool for their children.
State Sen. Norman Sakamoto received an Award of Excellence. He has been a leading advocate for educational reform in Hawai'i.
State Rep. Roy Takumi received an Award of Excellence for making education his priority as a legislator.
FACULTY HONORED FOR THEIR SERVICE
A number of University of Hawai'i faculty members have received the Hung Wo and Elizabeth Lau Ching Foundation Award for Faculty Service to the Community.
They are:
Cynthia Foreman, assistant professor of economics, Maui Community College.
W. Craig Howes, professor of English, director of the Center for Biographic Research, UH-Manoa.
Davianna McGregor, professor of ethnic studies, UH-Manoa.
William Puette, director of the Center for Labor Education and Research, UH-West O'ahu.
MCCLAIN RECEIVES JACKSTADT AWARD
University of Hawai'i interim President David McClain has won the Hawai'i Council on Economic Education's 2005 Stephen L. Jackstadt Award.
The award, named after the former council director who contributed to economic literacy in Hawai'i, recognizes an individual's support of economic education in Hawai'i. According to council executive director Kristine Castagnara, McClain has been a solid supporter of economic education for decades, especially in educating Hawai'i's youth.
