Lahainaluna High School football coach Robert Watson has been selected by the NFL to participate in the fifth annual NFL Youth Football Summit, Aug. 5 to 7, during the 2005 Hall of Fame Weekend in Canton, Ohio.

Watson, who led the Lunas to the Maui Interscholastic League championship and to the state semifinals, is among 51 top high school football coaches, representing each state and Washington, D.C. He will have the opportunity to meet Hall of Famers and industry experts, attend a private event at the Hall of Fame and a dinner hosted by NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue.

High school football coaches registered for an opportunity to attend the Summit by entering a nomination and essay contest conducted by the NFL through its high school football Web site, NFLHS.com.

Coaches submitted online essays in which they wrote about their coaching careers, commitment to youth and coaching philosophies.

A panel, consisting of local state representatives, reviewed the essays, and selected the coaches to serve as their state's delegate.
