One guard was injured and two others were punched but didn't sustain any injuries Wednesday night during a disturbance among boys at the Hawai'i Youth Correctional Facility, state officials said.

One of the guards, Josh Duvauchelle, 27, said he was struck in the leg by a flying chair. He was treated at a hospital.

"Thirteen boys were in the module when this happened," said Sharon Agnew, executive director of the state Office of Youth Services, which runs the facility. "Three of them acted out and the other 10 were compliant (when ordered to return to their rooms)."

Two boys involved in the altercation, including the one who threw the chair, are 16 years old and the other is 18, Agnew said.

Duvauchelle has worked as a youth corrections officer at the facility since January. He said he had to make sure that 13 boys in his charge in another module were locked in their rooms before he could respond to the disturbance, which began about 8 p.m..

"The minute I walked in, there were three boys on me," Duvauchelle said in a telephone interview. "I took one of them to the ground and was able to fend off the other two who were punching me and kicking me in the head."

Duvauchelle said he returned the next day to his job at the youth facility.

He said another of the youth corrections officers was injured when he was hit in the legs by a chair and has yet to return to work. That officer's name was not released.

Agnew said conflicts between wards of the facility and corrections officers are not uncommon. She said the state attorney general's office is investigating the incident, which appears to have been caught on video by a security camera. The investigation will collect reports from guards, youths and corrections officers and also view tapes before deciding whether to file criminal charges against the three boys.
