Wai'anae boxers to defend world titles

Wai'anae Boxing Club's Antone Pereira, 14, and Jonathan Dinong, 12, will try to win their second consecutive titles in the 2005 Ringside World Championships, Aug. 2 to 6, at Kansas City, Mo.

Pereira won the 112-pound (age 13-14) featherweight division, and Dinong captured the 85-pound (age 11-12) junior lightweight division last year.

Teammates Helena Delacruz, 13, Dido Rodrigues, 11, and Jada Pereira, 10, will also compete in the event held at the Kansas City Airport Expo Center.

The Ringside World Championships is the world's largest amateur boxing event, according to John Brown, chairman of Ringside, Inc. Last year, the tournament broke records for entries (1,500), competitors (1,353) and bouts (1,397), according to Brown.


YOUTH BASEBALL


'AIEA MUSTANGS LOSE

Tecolote, Calif., rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat 'Aiea, 6-4, last night in the P.O.N.Y. Mustang (ages 9-10) West Zone Tournament at Chino Hills, Calif.

Tecolote scored two runs in the first inning and two in the third before 'Aiea rallied with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game.

'Aiea is 1-1 in the tournament after beating Blossom Valley, Calif., 9-5, on Thursday.


JUDO


50TH STATE CELEBRATION

The 50th State Judo Association is culminating a week-long celebration of judo with a 25th anniversary dinner tonight at the Dole Cannery Plantation Ball Room.

The Uemura Cup Judo Championships will showcase more than 300 judoka from Japan, Guam, Europe, the Mainland and Hawai'i. A kata competition will take place at 7:30 a.m. The tournament starts at 8 a.m. today at Salt Lake District Park.


WRESTLING


WOMEN 3RD IN JUNIORS

A team of Hawai'i female wrestlers placed third in the Women's Junior National Duals at the FargoDome at Fargo, N.D., Thursday.

In the third-place match, Team Hawai'i beat Team Ohio, 24-4.

Team members include Carla Watase, Joleen Oshiro, Shyla Iokia, Lauren Primiano, Sarah Aoki, Kara Takasaki, Krystal Kiyuna, Sheryl Manglaylay, Ashley Poling, Rayna Hirata, Pi'ikea Kalalau, and Desiree Memea.
