National Spelling Bee competition ends for 'Ewa Beach girl

WASHINGTON — A run at the 78th Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee ended today in the third round for 13-year-old Jasmine A. Kaneshiro of 'Ewa Beach.

Jasmine, a seventh-grader at Hawai`i Baptist Academy, made it through the first two rounds of the competition, completing a 25-word written test in the first round and correctly spelling "puerile."

Her word on the third round was "hominivorous," but she was unable to give the correct spelling.

She was among 273 spellers from all 50 states and the District of Columbia as well as American Samoa, the Bahamas, Canada, Europe, Guam, Jamaica, New Zealand, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The final rounds will be televised live tomorrow on ESPN.
