Tonight's Must-See

Tonight on KHNL News 8

KHNL News 8's Lyle Galdeira and Russell Yamanoha take you out for tasty tacos at Diego's Taco Shop in Pearl City. It's this weeks "Cheap Eats." Plus, KHNL News 8's Walter Makaula profiles another of "Hawai'i's Most Wanted."

"McQueen: The Essence of Cool," 2, 5:30 p.m., Turner Classic Movies; and "American Masters: Ella Fitzgerald: Something to Live For," 9 p.m., PBS. Two fascinating profiles run back to back. They remind us that immensely talented people might have nothing in common. Ella Fitzgerald was shy with little flash to her personality or her life. She sang magnificently, though, and this 90-minute special is filled with great clips. Steve McQueen had sizzle and passion. Even before he became a star, people noticed the intense, bare-chested guy zooming around New York City on a motorcycle. Watch both films and catch opposite routes to greatness.

"Beauty and the Geek" debut, 7 p.m., WB. This odd reality show produced by Ashton Kutcher pairs beautiful women with guys who are smart but socially insecure. The concept is riddled with stereotypes. Still, the people on both sides are engaging. Occasionally, stereotypes are fulfilled: One beauty guesses that South Dakota is south of North Carolina. She then says she really doesn't care where the states are.

Of Note

"The Contender" (2000), 6, 8:30 p.m., TNT. This political drama drew strong praise for writer-director Rod Lurie and star Joan Allen. She plays a senator who faces a smear campaign after being nominated for the vice-presidency.

"Eagles Farewell I Tour," 7 p.m., NBC. It was 34 years ago that the Eagles began making smooth California pop-rock. They've gone on to sell a reported 120 million albums with such classic singles as "Lyin' Eyes," "Hotel California" and "New Kid in Town." Now they've done more than 100 farewell-tour concerts. Here's one, taped in Melbourne, Australia.

"Supernanny," 7 p.m., ABC. In a summer switch, this reality show takes over the 7 p.m. slot, nudging reruns of "Lost" back to 9.

"Dancing with the Stars" debut, 8 p.m., ABC. This live reality competition show pairs celebrities with champion ballroom dancers.

"Inside TV Land: Tickled Pink," 8 p.m., TV Land. Here's a light look at which TV characters — from Samantha (of "Bewitched") to Xena of "Xena: Warrior Princess" — gay viewers have liked. There's not much substance, but it's a fun film.

"Lost," 9 p.m., ABC. As the summer begins, this excellent series settles into a new time slot and starts from the beginning. Here's the first episode with a plane crashing on a mysterious island.

"Law & Order," 9 p.m., NBC. A radio personality is accustomed to doing wild publicity stunts. When he's shot, police are skeptical.
