Ka'aihue homers twice in 13-12 loss

 •  Eldredge 4 for 4 in World Series

Kala Ka'aihue, a 2003 Iolani School graduate, hit a pair of two-run homers, but his South Mountain (Ariz.) Community College team lost to Iowa Western Community College, 13-12, yesterday and was eliminated from the NJCAA World Series in Grand Junction, Colo.

Ka'aihue batted 3 for 5, including a single, and finished the tournament with a .444 batting average and four home runs.

South Mountain led 12-6 after six innings, but yielded two runs in the seventh, four in the eighth and one in the ninth, with the winning run scoring on a throwing error.

South Mountain finished the season 48-20 and 2-2 in the double-elimination tournament, while Iowa Western improved to 49-12 and 2-1.

More Baseball

Two players from Hawai'i are on teams that will play in the NCAA Division I Baseball Regionals beginning this week.

• Pepperdine, which features senior pitcher Kea Kometani (Punahou 2001 from Honolulu), is in the Long Beach Regional with Long Beach State, Rhode Island and Southern California.

Kometani (10-5) has a 3.35 earned run average.

Creighton, which includes freshman second baseman Michael Lam (Punahou from Honolulu), is in the Lincoln, Neb., Regional, with Nebraska, Illinois-Chicago and North Carolina State.

Lam has not played in a game this season.

Stanford, which is in the Waco, Texas, Regional, features assistant coach Dave Nakama, who is a Kaiser grad. The regional also includes Baylor, Texas-San Antonio and Texas Christian.

• Lewis-Clark State College (Lewiston, Idaho) senior catcher Gavin Concepcion (Pearl City '01) hit a grand slam, but the Warriors lost, 11-10, in an NAIA World Series game Monday at Lewiston.

• Five baseball players from Hawai'i have earned West Coast Conference honors.

San Francisco senior designated hitter Cy Donald (Mililani) earned second-team accolades.

Pepperdine senior right-hander Kea Kometani (Punahou '01 of Honolulu), San Francisco senior second baseman Royce Fukuroku (Maui '01), USF junior right-hander Patrick McGuigan (Mid-Pacific '02 of Honolulu), and San Diego sophomore second baseman Keoni Ruth (Kamehameha '03 of 'Aiea) were named honorable mention.

Donald hit .436 in the WCC, leading the Dons with 17 hits, including a conference-leading nine pinch hits.

Kometani went 6-3 with a 3.65 ERA in the WCC. He is 10-5 overall with a 3.35 ERA and a career-high 90 strikeouts.

Fukuroku was second on the team in batting (.329), hits (57), doubles (11) and home runs (5).

McGuigan, USF's career saves leader, broke his own single-season saves record with seven and established career-bests in ERA (1.66), wins (5), innings (54¡) and strikeouts (50).

Ruth had 40 hits in 27 conference games, and was second on the team with an overall batting average of .338.

• Pepperdine senior right hander Kea Kometani (Punahou '01 of Honolulu) was named to the West Coast Conference Spring All-Academic team. He had a 3.34 GPA in economics.

• Chicago State sophomore second baseman Jonathan Sakurai (Aiea '03) was named to the Mid-Continent Conference first team.

Sakurai led the league in stolen bases (38) and tied for the team lead in hits (60).



Softball

• Redlands (Calif.) senior Courtney Cho (Kamehameha '01 of 'Aiea) was named the Frank Serrao Senior Student-Athlete of the Year by Redlands and was selected to the NCAA Division III West Region All-Tournament team.

Cho was also honored as a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete by her school. Her honor was listed incorrectly in an earlier Homegrown Report.

Junior Shelly Joslin (Kamehameha '02 of Waipahu) batted .341 with 10 doubles

• Azusa Pacific (Calif.) junior third baseman Rachel Yoshizu (Hawai'i Baptist of Kane'ohe) was named a Golden State Athletic Conference Scholar Athlete. She had a 3.69 GPA in Applied Health.



Women's Tennis

• Biola (Calif.) senior Rebecca Nations (of Kailua) was named a Daktronics-NAIA Women's All-America Scholar-Athlete and a Golden State Athletic Conference Scholar Athlete. She had a 3.88 GPA in art.

• UC Irvine freshman Jessica Broadfoot (Punahou '04 of Ho-nolulu) earned Big West Conference Scholar-Athletes honors. She went 15-11 in singles play.

• Princeton senior middle hitter Sean Vitousek (Hawai'i Prep '01 of Kamuela) was named to the All-Ivy Academic team for the spring season.

Vitousek, who earned a 3.51 GPA in Civil and Environmental Engineering, was also named to the Academic All-Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) team.

Harvard junior middle blocker John Freese (Punahou '02 of Honolulu) was also named to the Academic All-EIVA team. Freese earned a 3.54 GPA in government.



Women's Swimming

• Northern Colorado senior Sierra Binek (Waiakea '01 of Volcano) was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII Women's At-Large University Division team as selected by CoSIDA.

Binek, who has a 3.97 GPA in chemistry, completed her season with bests in both the 1,000 free (11:01.80) and 1650 free (18:27.00).



Men's Golf

• Loyola Marymount senior Chaz Inouye (St. Anthony '02) was named to the West Coast Conference Spring All-Academic team. He earned a 3.34 GPA in communications.



Women's Golf

• Pepperdine senior Rachel Kyono (Kaua'i '02) was named to the West Coast Conference Spring All-Academic team. She had a 3.25 GPA in psychology.



Signing

• Pearl City forward Chelsea Arakawa, an Advertiser All-State first team selection, signed a letter of intent to play soccer for Southern Oregon University.
