Irons, Patacchia share third in Fiji surf

Hawai'i surfers Bruce Irons and Fred Patacchia Jr. tied for third place in the Globe WCT Fiji men's surfing contest.

The final day of the four-day event was completed yesterday in 6- to 8-foot waves at Restaurants, Tavarua, Fiji.

Irons and Patacchia were both eliminated in the semifinals and received $10,000 each.

Irons was defeated by Florida's C.J. Hobgood, 17.67-15.23; Patacchia lost to six-time former world champion Kelly Slater of Florida, 19.57-16.86.

Slater went on to defeat Hobgood in the final and win the $30,000 first prize. Slater also took over the No. 1 ranking on the 2005 World Championship Tour.

Yesterday's contest was the fourth of 12 on the 2005 world tour.

Among the Hawai'i surfers, Andy Irons is ranked No. 4, Patacchia is No. 6, Bruce Irons is No. 12, Kalani Robb is No. 30, and Sunny Garcia is No. 33.

The next contest is scheduled to begin June 23 at Reunion Island.

Guiding prep athletes on tap tomorrow

Mililani High School will host The Student-Athlete & College Recruiting program tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.

The program, run by Michael Nadal, provides information to guide high school student-athletes in pursuing college athletics and in making the transition from prep to collegiate sports.

Nadal has run various programs over the past five years, including those at the University of Georgia, Clemson and Georgia Tech.

Jiu-Jitsu tournament set for Saturday

The Hawaiian Open of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championships, a one-day tournament for men, women and children, will take place Saturday at McCabe Gym on the Saint Louis School campus.

Athletes will compete in gi or no-gi divisions, and must follow standard Jiu-Jitsu rules, using submission grappling and throwing techniques.
