Bankruptcy filings jump 35%

Hawai'i bankruptcy filings soared nearly 35 percent in May ahead of a federal law scheduled to take effect later this year that will make it harder for people to wipe away their debts by declaring bankruptcy.

There were 360 filings last month, versus 267 in May of last year, according to figures released yesterday by the

U.S. Bankruptcy Court's Honolulu office. During the first five months of the year, filings were up about 2 percent from the same period a year earlier.



Medical center exec leaves post

St. Francis Healthcare System executive Roger Eitelman has been named president and chief executive officer of West Virginia University Hospitals-East.

Eitelman starts his new job July 18, the board of directors at the West Virginia firm said yesterday. For the past two years he has been administrator of St. Francis Medical Center-West in 'Ewa Beach, and senior vice president of the St. Francis Healthcare System.



Gaylord, Aston deal complete

Gaylord Entertainment Co. said it has completed the purchase of the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel for $107 million. Simultaneously, Gaylord sold an 80.1 percent interest in the hotel to a private real estate fund managed by DB Real Estate Opportunities Group.

Gaylord said it expects its gross investment in the property to be from $5 million to $7 million. ResortQuest, Gaylord's vacation rental property management company, will manage the hotel under a new 20-year agreement.



Workers' comp seminar June 23

The Department of Labor and Industrial Relations will hold a free seminar later this month to update businesses and employees on new administrative rules covering the state workers' compensation system.

The seminar is scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. June 23 in Room 321 of the Princess Ruth Ke'elikolani Building, 830 Punchbowl St. The new rules address the workers' compensation claims process and the treatment of injured workers.
