'O'o award recipients named

Thomas Kaulukukui and Auntie Mary Lou Kekuewa have been named recipients of 2005 'O'o Awards from the Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce.

Kaulukukui, an orator and former judge, was noted for his work in blending traditional Hawaiian and Polynesian values with Western ones.

Kekuewa and her daughter, Paulette Kahalepuna, have been instrumental in reviving and perpetuating the art of lei hulu, the making of feather lei and feather artistry.



Health leader earns Scout honor

Chuck Sted, president of Hawaii Pacific Health, was recently honored as a Distinguished Eagle Scout. It is the only service recognition that requires the recipient to have been associated with Scouting as a youth. The recipient must have attained the Eagle Scout rank a minimum of 25 years before his nomination, and over those years he must have rendered outstanding service to others.



Assistant prof to get $45,000 grant

Kirill Melnikov, assistant professor of physics at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa, was recently named a recipient of a 2005 Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship.

He will receive a $45,000 grant to support his research with the university's High Energy Physics Theory Group.



UH cancer center wins 5-year pact

The University of Hawaii Cancer Research Center of Hawai'i is one of 15 organizations nationwide awarded a five-year contract from the National Cancer Institute, the federal government's lead agency for cancer research, to operate its Cancer Information Service. The UH Cancer Research Center, the only NDI designated cancer center in the Pacific, will serve Hawai'i and the U.S. Pacific Territories, including American Samoa, Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.



Pacific islanders salute Tripler

In appreciation for providing specialized healthcare to more than 5,000 patients in the U.S. Associated Pacific Islands since 1990, Tripler Army Medical Center and Col. (Dr.) Donald Person have been recognized by the Pacific Island Health Officers Association. Plaques were received by Tripler's Commanding General Maj. Gen. Gale Pollock and Tripler's Pacific Island Health Care Project Medical Director Col. (Dr.) Person.

According to Person, caring for the unique Pacific patient population affords resident doctors the opportunity to diagnose and treat diseases and injuries rarely encountered in other parts of the world.



Cancer society honors volunteer

Dr. Ralph Vance, national president of the American Cancer Society, recently presented Dr. Brian Issell with the prestigious St. George Award, a national award given to outstanding volunteers. Dr. Issell served as president of the American Cancer Society's board of directors from 2002 to 2004 and has been a volunteer for 22 years.

Dr. Issell also received the Aumakua Award, created in honor of Gladys Brandt. The ACS's aumakua, the pueo, is the guardian spirit that serves to protect the Society's work.



Water contest winners named

First-place winners of the Board of Water Supply 2005 Water Conservation Week Poster Contest are: kindergarten, Jackie Wong, Ali'iolani Elementary School; grades one and two, Keenan Basug, grade one, Pu'ohala Elementary School; grades three and four, Alexa Perez, grade four, Kapolei Elementary School; grades five and six, Michelle Leung, 'Aina Haina Elementary School.

This year's theme is "Water Conservation Begins with Me — I'm a Water-Akamai Kid!" First- place winners receive a $100 U.S. Savings bond and a tour of the Nu'uanu watershed for their teacher and classmates.
