U.S. Open Sectional Monday at Ka'anapali

Twelve golfers will play 36 holes Monday to earn one spot in the U.S. Open.

The Ka'anapali Golf Courses North Course will be the site of a U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier. The first of two rounds will start at 7 a.m.

The medalist from the Ka'anapali qualifying will advance to the U.S. Open, June 16 through 19, at Pinehurst in North Carolina.

The 12 golfers are: Michael Castillo, Jonathan Ota, Regan Lee, Joe Phengsavath, Shizuo Mori, Pierre-Henri Soero, Brian Sasada, Eddie Lee, David Havens, Sean Maekawa, KC Botelho and Barry Henson.



Charities chosen for 2006 Mercedes event

Kapalua Maui Charities Inc., the host organization for the Mercedes Championships, has selected nine organizations that will benefit from the PGA Tour's opening event.

The agencies are:

Boy Scouts of America, Maui County Council; Friends of the Children's Justice Center; Hale Makua; J. Walter Cameron Center; Ka Lima O Maui; Lahainaluna High School Foundation; Maui Memorial Medical Center Foundation; Maui Preparatory Academy; and The Art School at Kapalua.

The 2005 Mercedes Championships raised $353,536.

The 2006 Mercedes Championships will be Jan. 2 through 8 at Kapalua's Plantation Course.



PGA Junior Series event deadline Monday

A PGA Junior Series tournament at the Turtle Bay's Fazio Course will be July 6 to 8.

Registration for the event is online only, and the deadline is Monday. The tournament is open to players between the ages of 13 and 18. Cost is $100.

Waialae Women's tourney July 18-19

The 49th Waialae Women's Invitational will be July 18 and 19 at Waialae Country Club. There are five flights in the tournament, which is open to women 18 and older with an established USGA handicap index of 26.1 or less as of yesterday.

Play begins at 7:45 a.m. each day. Entry fee is $185, which includes cart. Entry deadline is tomorrow.

Golf sample sale set for Saturday, Sunday

A two-day golf sample sale of equipment, shoes, apparel and accessories by local distributors will be held this weekend from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

One sale will be at the Mililani High School cafeteria on Saturday, the other at the Washington Middle School cafeteria on Sunday.
