Chaminade promotes basketball assistant

Matt Mahar, an assistant coach the past three seasons, has been promoted to head basketball coach at Chaminade University, the school announced yesterday.
Mahar, who also accepted the one-year position as CU athletic director, succeeds Aaron Griess, who resigned to accept the head coaching job at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minn.
Before joining the Chaminade staff, Mahar served as an assistant coach at Champlain College in Burlington, Vt. He also was an assistant at the University of Vermont, Johnson & Wales University and Johnson State College.
Mahar earned a degree in health science from Johnson State in 1996. He earned all-conference honors at Johnson State, and also led the nation in assists per game with nine, according to a CU press release.
Exhibition Saturday
Full Contact Showdown, a Super Brawl exhibition of rising mixed martial arts and kickboxing participants, will be held Saturday at the Kane'ohe Marine Corps Base Hawai'i.
Doors open at 7 p.m. with the first of about nine bouts beginning at 8.
Justin Holcombe and Mike Leonguerrero, two Marines who train at Bulls Pen in Honolulu, will make their mixed martial arts debut. Both are former wrestlers.
Super Brawl world champion Niko Vitale will serve as judge and be available for autographs.
