Church of Christ minister to speak

The Rev. Hector Lopez, the Central Pacific conference minister for the United Church of Christ, will serve as keynote speaker at the Hawai'i conference's Aha Pae'aina gathering.

The June 12-18 session includes worship, Bible study, fellowship and workshops for UCC churches across the state. The theme for the year is "God Steers, We Paddle."

Pet Blessing Festival slated

The Shinto temple, Hawaii Kotohira Jinsha-Hawaii Dazaifu Tenmangu, is holding a Pet Blessing Festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow at the temple, 1239 Olomea St. The Shinto priest will celebrate all creatures as part of Pet Appreciation Week. Anyone is welcome to bring leashed or caged pets for a blessing. There will also be refreshments.

Habitat to host 'Build-a-thon'

Habitat for Humanity is hosting a "Junior Build-a-thon" for children ages 9-12.

Church-sponsored groups of three to five adolescents will compete in building a Habitat home out of toy Legos from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the Manoa Valley Church's gym, 2728 Huapala St. Each group is asked to seek sponsors, with a suggested minimum donation of $10.

Refreshments will be served afterward.
