Kyle Pape

With big shoes to fill, Iolani School's Kyle Pape slid into them as comfortably as anyone could imagine.

When three-time Advertiser State Basketball Player of the Year Derrick Low — the most highly recruited Hawai'i high school player ever — graduated in 2004, he left behind a team with only two returning seniors.

Kyle Pape stepped forward and kept the beat flowing, helping the Raiders win an unprecedented fourth straight state championship.

Pape capped a remarkable season by scoring 93 points in three state tournament games, converting a staggering 37 of 40 free-throw attempts. He was named Advertiser State Player of the Year, but his exploits were not limited to this year or to one sport.

Pape was a first-team Interscholastic League of Honolulu all-star as a junior and has been a key contributor for three years, helping the Raiders extend their streak of victories against Hawai'i opponents to 100 games.

Pape also was a three-year standout in volleyball, helping Iolani win its first ILH title in 24 years as a junior and first state championship in 2003.

Off the court, Pape carried a 3.4 cumulative grade-point average while taking advanced placement courses and was a volunteer coach at the Kalakaua Foundation Clinic and Kalanianaole Athletic Club.

He has accepted a scholarship to play basketball at Colorado School of Mines, where he plans to major in civil engineering.
