Futi Tavana

For an athlete from Kaua'i to be named first-team All-State always was a rarity. For an athlete from the Garden Island to make first-team All-State in two sports was unheard of.

Until this year.

Kaua'i High School's Futi Tavana made history by being named to The Advertiser's All-State first team in both volleyball and basketball.

In volleyball, Tavana was a 6-foot-8 outside hitter who was athletic enough to play all six rotations, making him an offensive threat even in the back row.

Grade-point average: 3.67

College: Brigham Young University

In basketball, Tavana was a dominant force not only on Kaua'i, but also against Mainland competition in the preseason and in the state tournament. He was able to block shots and run the floor, as well as alter shots and opponents' game plans.

Tavana's selection to the Advertiser's All-State first team in basketball is believed to be a first for Kaua'i.

Off the court, Tavana carried a 3.67 cumulative grade-point average and was a friendly, respected member of the student body. He has accepted a scholarship offer to play volleyball for Brigham Young University.
