Peter Dunn-Rankin of Hawai'i Kai will head off to Pittsburgh on Monday as the only Islander in his age group to play in the golf event of the Senior Olympics.

Peter Dunn-Rankin, 75, of Hawai'i Kai, qualified for the Senior Olympics by shooting an 83 at Barbers Point Golf Course.

While he formerly competed in swimming events at the Senior Olympics, he decided to focus solely on golf this year. In 2002, he was a finalist for Hawai'i Senior Athlete of the Year.

Dunn-Rankin is well-known in fishing circles as a maker of fishing lures as well as a frequent contributor to Hawai'i Fishing News and author of the book "Fishing the Reefs."

When I met Dunn-Rankin, a nonstop creative thinker, at the golf course he was wearing his latest invention: a little wire thingamajig that hooked onto his back pocket and up over his belt. He described it as a "wallet security card."

During a recent trip to Rome, his wallet was snatched from his front pants pocket. He created this wire-and-spring contraption to attach to a credit card inside his wallet.

If someone were to try to pull out his wallet, not only would that person's hand get caught, but the security device would hold the wallet in place.

Name: Peter Dunn-Rankin.

Age: 75.

Profession: Retired professor, dean and chairman of the Department of Educational Psychology at UH-Manoa, educational researcher, inventor, maker of fishing lures, artist and writer.

Height: 6 feet.

Weight: 152.

Workout habits: Plays golf twice a week and practices golf shots four times a week, does a weight workout twice a week and swims 600 meters once a week.

When and why I started working out: While Dunn-Rankin has played golf for more than 20 years, two years ago he worked with a personal trainer to set up weight and medicine-ball exercises to help him improve his golf game; he performs these religiously. In addition, whenever he sees something is a little off with his golf game, he takes some lessons to straighten it out.

He also had a goal of improving his heart health with increased exercise. A former college swimmer, he began training again at the Oahu Club several years ago. His favorite strokes are freestyle and breast stroke.

My good foods/bad foods: "My good foods are fruits, vegetables, fish, grains and milk. My bad foods are butter, steak, sugar and Vienna sausage. My wife knows nutrition upside down and backwards, so she helps keep me on track."

My biggest motivator: "Setting goals and wanting to create things." Dunn-Rankin used to set goals to shoot his age in golf. When he was 74 he shot a 72. Since turning 75 he has shot 71, 72, 73, 74. His goal is to shoot 69. To qualify for the Senior Olympics this year, he had to shoot an 89 at the Barbers Point Golf Course; he shot an 83 and was the only Hawai'i golfer in his age group to qualify.

My biggest roadblock to fitness: "Trying to get enough cardiovascular exercise. I don't run, and it's hard to get my heart rate high enough when I'm swimming."

What saves my sanity: "I keep busy making things." Indeed. In addition to his fishing lures, he has singlehandedly built a sailboat and a kayak, as well as numerous pieces of furniture for his home. He paints a great deal (acrylics on canvas) and often invents things he feels the world needs.

My next challenge: To make a polyurethane lure that won't break and to reduce his 9 handicap. Naturally, he would also like to win his age group in golf at the Senior Olympics.

Advice for those in the same boat: "Be physically active at something you like."
