The Sept. 3 football season opener between host University of Hawai'i and two-time defending national champion Southern California will kick off at 1 p.m., UH officials announced yesterday.

In moving from Aloha Stadium's usual 6 p.m. start, the game will open in prime time on the East Coast. ESPN2 will televise the game nationally.

"It'll be watched by a lot of people," UH coach June Jones said. "This is good exposure for the program, our school and the state."

Said UH athletic director Herman Frazier: "We are proud to have our opening game selected for national television. This game, while not in our traditional time slot, will bring great exposure to our state and our program all over the country."

In the past, Jones has requested switching sidelines — UH usually uses the mauka side —for afternoon games to avoid facing the setting sun. This time, Jones said, the Warriors will keep their usual sideline and locker room.

"At that time, it doesn't matter," Jones said. "We'll both be in the sun."

The Warriors are scheduled to appear on national television three times in the 2005 season. Last week, the Western Athletic Conference announced that the Warriors would appear on ABC Television on Oct. 29, against Fresno State. The Wisconsin game on Friday, Nov. 25, also will be telecast on ESPN2.
