Perez advances in Manoa Cup tourney

Advertiser Staff

Ryan Perez moved two steps closer to defending his Manoa Cup championship yesterday.

Perez beat Duane Pacheco, 4 and 3, in the round of 64, then ousted Garret Hayashi, 4 and 2, in the round of 32 at the Oahu Country Club course.

Perez will meet Reyn Tanaka in today's first match of the round of 16 starting at 7 a.m. Tanaka eliminated four-time Manoa Cup champion Brandan Kop, 2 and 1, in the round of 32.

Two other Manoa Cup champions — Travis Toyama (2002) and Dick Sieradzki (1990) — also advanced to the round of 16.

Toyama meets Christian Akau at 7:24, and Sieradzki takes on recent Damien Memorial High School graduate and 2003 runner-up Kurt Nino at 7:40.

Medalist TJ Kua defeated Michael Jay Sato, 3 and 2, and Raymond Tendo, 2 and 1, to reach the round of 16, where he will play Sean Doi at 7:32.

Tendo reached the round of 32 with a 1-up victory over recent Kamehameha Schools graduate Mari Chun, the only female to qualify for the prestigious match-play event.

The Manoa Cup, which will crown its 97th champion this week, is the oldest continuous golf tournament in Hawai'i.
