Ballard surfs in second

Advertiser Staff

Kaua'i's Rochelle Ballard placed second in the Rip Curl Venus Festival women's surfing contest yesterday.

The final day of the event was completed in 2- to 4-foot waves at Seignosse, France.

Australia's Chelsea Georgeson defeated Ballard in the final, 12.9-12.75. Ballard led for most of the 35-minute heat, but Georgeson scored a 5.9 with four minutes remaining to take the lead for good.

Ballard received $6,000 for her runner-up finish, which was her best showing of this year.

"I'm kind of bummed that I didn't win because I haven't won in a while," Ballard said. "But I'm still very, very stoked to have been in the final because the competition is so stiff now."

Kaua'i's Keala Kennelly upset world champion Sofia Mulanovich of Peru in the quarterfinals. Ballard then beat Kennelly in the semifinals.
