DeLima taking a Gilbert & Sullivan turn

By Wayne Harada
Advertiser Entertainment Writer

ROLE-PLAYING: Frank DeLima, somewhat "homeless" these days (he's dickering for a night spot where he can resume his comedy shows), apparently will be going operatic in July, appearing as the Sergeant of Police in the Hawai'i Opera Theatre's "Pirates of Penzance," playing July 22-24 and 29-31 at Blaisdell Concert Hall. The Gilbert & Sullivan classic also features Michael Gallup as Major General Stanley, Curt Olds as the Pirate King, Jean Stillwell as Ruth, George Dyer as Frederick, Mary Chesnut Hicks as Edith and Georgine Stark as Kate. For tickets, call 596-7858 or write to hottickets@hawaiiopera.org. ...

DeLima does a Father's Day Show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 19 at Dot's in Waipahu. Cost is $22.50 in advance for adults, $17.50 in advance for children 4 to 10, or $25 and $20 at the door. Tots younger than 4 are free if not occupying a seat. Call 622-4166 for reservations. DeLima also is contemplating a "Make Me Laugh" outing somewhere soon. ...

Doug Kreeger, 26, is making his off-Broadway debut in a musical, "Thrill Me." He graduated from New York University and toured with "Peter Pan" and "Grease" in America, and "Hair" in Europe. Kreeger is a 1997 Punahou grad. ...

Out California Adventure way (next door to Disneyland in Anaheim), localites Joseph Morales and Robert Orosco are part of the "Aladdin" musical at the Hyperion Theatre. The former now plays the title character, the latter the Sultan (father of Princess Jasmine), though they often rotate roles. Sarah Kobayashi and Kalen Sakima, other Honolulans, are likewise in the cast. All had a reunion with hometowners Dawe, Jade and Aubrey Glover, who saw six different performances of the Disney show. ...

And Cliffton Hall, formerly of Hawai'i, just finished playing the role of Ta Wang in the Fullerton (Calif.) Civic Light Opera's "Flower Drum Song." ...

Here 'n' there: The 60th Miss Hawai'i will be crowned tomorrow night at the Hilton Hawaiian Village's Coral Ballroom. Former Miss America Angela Baraquio makes an appearance; Robert Cazimero shares his mellifluous voice during the evening-wear phase. And Marcelo Pacleb's 24/7 DanceForce group also will perform. ...

Kevin Gershan, a producer-director of "Entertainment Tonight," is visiting deejay pal Ron Jacobs. Gershan, who does stints for "ET" and "The Insider," first met Whodaguy when he was 13, when Jacobs was with KHJ in Los Angeles. Gershan also was the producer, during the last years, of the Robert W. Morgan radio show. He's on "ET" assignment to cover Ray Romano's comedy show with Phil Rosenthal, this Saturday and Sunday at Blaisdell Concert Hall. ...

Trivia: Rosenthal played the sous chef in Adam Sandler's "Spanglish." And Romano's character, Raymond Barone, has appeared on not just "Everybody Loves Raymond" but on "Becker," "Cosby," "The Nanny" and "The King of Queens." ...

Date book: "Turning 70 ain't that bad," says Jimmy Borges, who had one celebration after another in L.A. Christie Burton, former Trappers beauty, set up a brunch with long-time pal Berry Gordon, of Motown Records fame, at his Bel-Air mansion, where the celebrants played golf on Gordy's nine-hole course in his back yard. Another night, Danica McKellar (Winnie on "The Wonder Years") held a bash (with her mom Mahalia) at Herb Alpert's trendy restaurant Vibratto. Borges' daughter Steff and son-in-law Randy hosted a dinner at their Tarzana home, inviting singers Sue Raney, Monica Mancini, Gregg Fields (Frank Sinatra's drummer and v.p. of Concord Records), and studio musicians Ira Nepus, Les Benedict, Doug McDonald, Jimmy Dykes and Carmen Fanzone, with food catered by L&L's Eddie Flores' Hawaiian Barbecue organization. Borges visited his mom and sister, too, and was honored at a Beverly Hills bash where Barbara Sinatra greeted him and invited him to sing at an upcoming Sinatra Celebrity Golf Tournament in Palm Desert. Mrs. B, Vicki, couldn't make the trip; she is leaving Communications Pacific today to become executive assistant for Randy Fujiki at The Resort Group, Jeff Stone's company that has done master-planning for such projects as Ko Olina and Princeville. ...

Augie Rey has been held over indefinitely as a Saturday attraction at the Elks Club, joined by Bobby King and Carlos Barboza. ...
