3R's project gives $900,000 for repairs

The Hawai'i 3R's federal school-repair program has awarded more than $900,000 for repairs and maintenance to 33 public schools — the most ambitious round of awards yet for schools on Maui, Hawai'i, Lana'i and O'ahu. This is the 15th round of grants.

Most of the work — resurfacing playgrounds, replacing windows, doors and chalkboards, and repainting of exterior and interior of buildings and classrooms — will be done during the summer break. With the "sweat equity" used by volunteers, the work is valued at more than $2.1 million.

The Hawai'i 3R's was created in 2001 by U.S. Sen. Dan Inouye. The name 3R's stands for "Repair, Remodel and Restore."

The program was designed to tackle a portion of the estimated $560 million in backlogged school repairs.

The schools receiving awards include: 'Ahuimanu Elementary, King Intermediate, 'Aiea Intermediate, King Kamehameha III Elementary, 'Aikahi Elementary, Lahainaluna High School, Aliamanu Elementary, Lana'i High & Elementary, Aliamanu Middle, Manana Elementary, 'Anuenue School, Manoa Elementary, Campbell High School, Mililani High School, Castle High School, Mokapu Elementary and Enchanted Lake Elementary.

Also receiving grants were Mountain View Elementary, Hau'ula Elementary, Palisades Elementary, Kahuku Elementary, Pope Elementary, Kahuku High & Intermediate, Sunset Beach Elementary, Kailua Elementary, Waiahole Elementary, Kalaheo High School, Waikele Elementary, Kane'ohe Elementary, Waimanalo Elementary & Intermediate, Kapunahala Elementary, Waimea Middle and Kihei Elementary.
