Miranda won't be kicking for UH

Nolan Miranda said he will not return to the University of Hawai'i football team because of personal reasons, leaving the Warriors without an experienced placekicker entering the Aug. 4 start of training camp.

"It's kind of sad," Miranda said. "If I had my choice, I would (play)."

The Warriors are seeking a successor to Justin Ayat, who completed his NCAA eligibility at the end of the past Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl on Christmas Eve.

Punter Tim Wright, who had three kickoffs last year, transferred to Murray State, a Division I-AA school in Kentucky, at the end of the 2004 fall semester.

C.J. Santiago, a 2004 Saint Louis School graduate who redshirted last season, is expected to transfer to Orange Coast Community College in California, said Mouse Davis, who coordinates the Warriors' special teams.

Placekickers Daniel Kelly of Linfield Christian School in Temecula, Calif., and Chris Chalmers of Canyon High School in Canyon Country, Calif., are among 105 players invited to compete in training camp.

Jeremy Shibata, a kicker from Iowa City West High School, is expected to join the Warriors on Aug. 22, the first day of UH's fall semester, when the 105-player roster limit is lifted.

As the only kicker on the spring roster, Miranda was considered to be the favorite. As a freshman in 2003, he split time when Ayat struggled. Miranda converted 3 of 5 field-goal attempts and was 21 of 22 on point-after kicks. He scored 12 points in a triple-overtime victory over Houston in the 2003 Hawai'i Bowl.

Last season, he did not attempt a kick in a game after struggling in practices. He had two kickoffs.

Miranda, who was not on scholarship, said his lack of playing time last season did not factor in his decision to leave the team. He likely would have received a scholarship if he earned the starting job this season.

"He's a good kid," Davis said. "He has to take care of what he has to take care of. I understand that."

During a recent meeting with UH coach June Jones, Miranda was assured he could rejoin the team "if things changed. He told me I can give him a call anytime. I appreciate that."

Jones said: "Sometimes you have to do what you have to do. He has some priorities. He needs to help his family. You root him along. He has to do what he has to do to get things right. He's a good kid, and he has good potential as a kicker. He competed and did good. Hopefully, he'll get it all situated and get back in school."

Clinic continues

The Hawai'i Speed and Quickness clinic continues with sessions Saturday and Sunday at the UH athletic complex.

The age groups are 7-12 (8:30-10 a.m.) and 13-older (10:30 a.m.-noon).

For a $10 fee per session, each camper receives instruction in plyometrics, resistance training and running tips.

This weekend, campers also will be tested in the same disciplines used at football combines, such as 40-yard dashes and vertical jumps.
