Defending champion beaten in Manoa Cup

Reyn Tanaka eliminated defending champion Ryan Perez, 5 and 4, yesterday in the round of 16 of the 97th Manoa Cup golf tournament at Oahu Country Club.

It was the second consecutive day in which Tanaka, a 2004 Mid-Pacific graduate, ousted a former Manoa Cup champion. On Tuesday, Tanaka defeated four-time champion Brandan Kop.

Tanaka will play Bradley Shigezawa in today's quarterfinals of the oldest continuous golf tournament in Hawai'i.

Shigezawa defeated Tom Goodbody, 5 and 4, yesterday.

In other round of 16 matches:

• 2002 champion Travis Toyama defeated Christian Akau, 1 up;

• Kurt Nino ousted 1990 champion Dick Sieradzki, 9 and 7;

• Doug Williams defeated Kawika Shoji, 6 and 5;

• Jacob Low beat Shannon Sibayan, 6 and 5;

• TJ Kua edged Sean Doi, 1 up;

• Kellan Anderson beat Erick Ellgren, 1 up.

In today's 18-hole quarterfinals, Tanaka will play Shigezawa at 7 a.m., followed by Anderson vs. Toyama at 7:08; Kua vs. Nino at 7:16 and Low vs. Williams at 7:24.

All matches will start from the first tee.



BASKETBALL

HPU signs guard

Adrian Johnson, a 6-foot-3 guard/forward out of San Diego City College, has signed a letter to play for Hawai'i Pacific next season.

Johnson averaged 13.6 points per game and was named to the All-Pacific Coast Conference second team.

"Adrian will be the most athletic player on our team," said new HPU coach Kelly Wells.
